Marin have arguably done more than any other brand in the UK to popularise the concept of single pivot full suspension bikes. At a time when many other manufacturers were chasing more complex, multi pivot designs, Marin kept the single pivot faith. Marin’s chief suspension designer, Jon Whyte, with his background in Formula One racing, recognised that the benefits of simplicity, light weight and easy maintenance easily outweighed any disadvantages. At first glance the Palisades Trail is a conventional, fairly skinny tubed aluminium bike, but the Ovation Comp tubing is actually a sort of coffin section. This gives plenty of vertical stiffness but lets in more lateral flex than a standard oversize round tube. Stays, too, are relatively narrow and the dropouts are fairly simple plate pieces with a slight bit of cast relief. Again, we’re sad to see no hose/cable mounts on the rest of the frame, but the simple, open, down tube gear cable routing is generally the lowest maintenance layout. More »
