Marin race ace Billy Whenman rode in Team GB colours for the first time in France in the MTB Tour and managed a podium first time out! Then a run of bad luck – he was riding with number board 13 – took over and despite his usual fierce riding the teenager couldn’t get among the medals. This is Billy’s report from La Belle France:p3030047 More »

Marin teen girl Sammy Bryant took bronze in the National Mountain Bike Championships 2008 after a stiff battle with rival Katie Wilton. This is Sammy’s report:
Having ridden the course at round Three of the Southern XC I decided not to pre-ride the course at all this time.
With the 5 youth girls entered and with me still not back to my best performance this was going to be a tough race to get on the podium.
Prior to the race I started having gear change problems and required a new rear mech. This had been fitted Saturday night  and so my warm up was also testing the gear change under all conditions and all was ok.
On the grid I was eager to get going and was going to try to ride with the girls at the front and not get dropped.
As the race started I was in second place and then third and with only half a lap done I was back in fourth and at the end of the first lap found myself in 5th place.
But, as the commentator announced, there were only 50 seconds between third and fifth.
Working with Katie Wilton, who was in fourth place, within a third of a lap we had caught and passed Hannah Shenton who then stopped with a puncture.
This now meant Katie and I were fighting for the bronze medal. From the previous lap I found Katie was really good at the downhill sections but I could more than match her on the hills.
With the run in to the finish being mainly uphill I decided to sit on her back wheel until reaching the final section. Taking a torq gel with half a lap to go I arrived at the uphill section and went past Katie but this time she stayed with me, keeping to the inside line the next uphill section.
Again I tried to pull away but still Katie stayed with me. As we turned the hairpin in the woods, but in view of the finish, the commentator could see how close we were.
At this point I decided to sprint all the way up the final little climb and back into the arena and, I am really pleased to say, took the bronze medal.
